This week's Spotlight: Pesto

Pesto

The word “pesto” is a generic term for any uncooked sauce made by crushing or grinding ingredients into a paste. Classic pesto is usually made with fresh basil, garlic, salt, olive oil, parmesan cheese and pine nuts. Just a small amount added to any dish can elevate the flavor.

Although pesto is high in fat, most of the fat is unsaturated. It has many health benefits and is part of the Mediterranean diet. Here are a few:

1. Lowers the risk of heart disease, heart attack & stroke.

2. Lowers risk of diabetes.

3. May also help in aiding with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

4. Heatly fats found in pesto can help with reducing inflammation.

5. May improve blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels.
